Mount Softball Still in Hunt for MAAC Playoff Spot Heading into Final Series at Rider

MOUNT UPDATE:  Mount St. Mary's dropped two of three games at home to Quinnipiac this past weekend, and is now 17-28 overall and 12-12 in the MAAC.  Gina Del Giorno's walk-off single lifted the Mount to a split of Sunday's Senior Day doubleheader against the Bobcats.  The Mount took game two, 4-3, after falling in the opener, 5-1.  Avery Dinges leads the Mount in batting average (.375), runs (35), doubles (13), triples (4), RBI (19) and stolen bases (39).  Del Giorno leads the Mount with 50 hits while recording a .360 average and 15 steals on the year.  In the circle, the trio of Ellie Meier (6-6, 3.03 ERA), Emmaleigh Zagrodnicheck (4-8, 3.08 ERA) and Sophia Schmehl (5-6, 3.45 ERA) have led the way.

ABOUT THE BRONCS:  Rider split a non-conference doubleheader with Lafayette on Tuesday and enter the weekend 25-21 overall and 14-10 in the MAAC.  Rider's offense has been strong all year as the Broncs are hitting .303 as a team while averaging league-best 5.6 runs per game.  The duo of Maddie Luedtke (.375, 10 HR, 32 RBI) and Kendall Reda-Fehsal (.364, 12 HR, 44 RBI)  have provided the pop in the lineup.  Gabi Rodriguez (10-8, 3.45 ERA, 113.2 IP) and Fallyn Stoeckel (12-10, 4.99 ERA, 141.2 IP) are the team's top two starters.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES:  Rider holds a 10-2 lead in the all-time series with the Mountaineers.  The Broncs have won the last five matchups, including a doubleheader sweep at the Mount last season (5-0, 18-4).  The Mountaineers are 2-5 against the Broncs in MAAC regular season matchups since joining the league in 2022-23.  Mount St. Mary's is 0-5 all-time on the road against the Broncs.

WHAT'S AT STAKE:  The Mount is currently in eighth place in the MAAC standings with a 12-12 record heading into the final weekend of the season.  The top six teams earn a spot at the upcoming MAAC Championships.  Marist leads with a 21-3 record, followed by Fairfield (16-7), Siena (15-9), Quinnipiac (15-10), Iona (15-10), Rider (14-10) and Sacred Heart (14-10).  For the Mount to earn a spot in the playoffs, they will need to sweep the Broncs while needing either Siena, Iona, Quinnipiac or Sacred Heart to also be swept.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • Avery Dinges has 39 stolen bases this season, tying her with Louisville's Chelsea Mack and Dayton's Kirman Bailey for the national lead.The 39 steals also match the Mount's school record that was set by Bridgette Gilliano in 2022.
  • Gina Del Giorno had a pair of multiple hit games in the Mount's doubleheader split with Quinnipiac on Sunday to give her a team-high 15 multiple hit games this year.Del Giorno has a team-high 50 base hits this season, posting a career-best .360 average while adding 15 stolen bases and 23 runs scored.
  • Freshman Sharon Manni is hitting a team-best .369 (24-for-65) in the Mount's 24 MAAC games this season.
  • Ellie Meier is 3-3 with a 1.27 ERA over her past six appearances (33.0 IP) for the Mountaineers.In MAAC play this year, Meier is 5-4 with a 2.05 ERA in 10 appearances (eight starts) with seven complete games.
  • Emmaleigh Zagrodnicheck is 3-4 with a 1.75 ERA over her past seven appearances (40.0 IP) for the Mount, posting a pair of shutouts and five complete games over that span.In MAAC play this season, Zagrodnicheck is 3-5 with a 2.73 ERA and seven complete games in a team-high 56.1 innings pitched in MAAC regular season games this year.
  • Rounding out the Mount's pitching trio, Sophia Schmehl has also been hot down the stretch, going 4-2 with a 2.08 ERA over her past six appearances.She has 25 strikeouts in 37 innings over that span.In MAAC play, Schmehl is 4-3 with a 2.20 ERA in nine appearances (eight starts) with five complete games and a team-high 35 strikeouts.
  • The Mount's 17 wins this season are the most since the 2023 team went 32-19.The Mount is 12-12 in MAAC play this year after going a combined 11-38 over the past two seasons.The Mount is still in contention for a MAAC playoff spot in this last weekend, and is looking to earn a spot in the MAAC Championships since their first season in the league in 2023.
  • Mount St. Mary's is tied for second in the MAAC with 19 double plays turned.Iona is leads the circuit with 25 double plays while the Mount and Sacred Heart are tied for second with 19.
