Women’s Water Polo Travels to California for the 2026 Edition of the Claremont Convergence

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 5, 2026) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo travels to California for this year's edition of the Claremont Convergence Tournament, playing against Biola, Whittier, and Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton while playing Chapman in Orange. Two weekends ago, at the Michigan Invitational, the team recorded two wins, notching victories against both Mercyhurst and McKendree.
 
MOUNT UPDATE
 
The Mountaineers started the first day in Michigan with a tough defeat to Indiana in Ann Arbor, with the Hoosiers doing the season double over the Mount, outscoring them 28-8 across the two games. Lotte Schreurs, Kali Viers, and Leilani Horan all contributed solo scores in the contest while Taylor Wilson recorded three steals against Indiana. Olivia Fernie recorded seven saves in goal for the Mountaineers against Indiana.
 
In game two of the day against Mercyhurst, Wilson got the scoring started for the Mount, scoring two goals in as many minutes. But a resurgent Lakers offense drew things up late in the quarter, sending both teams into the first intermission tied 2-2.
 
After a back-and-forth offensive exchange to start the second quarter, the Mount rattled off five goals in a row to go into halftime up 8-4. Goals from Horan, Schreurs, Kiele Davidson, and Lucia Redaelli flew into the goal while Anna Kegel scored a double in the quarter of play.
 
Claire Gebhardt got the scoring started for the Mountaineers in the third, scoring a goal less than a minute from the starting swim-off. Gebhardt scored once again three minutes later, converting from the penalty spot while Viers converted on goal less than a minute later. Viers scored one more time before the quarter ended, sending the Mount into the final intermission up 12-5. Kegel converted on goal two more times in the final quarter, scoring her fourth goal of the day against the Lakers, rounding out the win for the Mount.
 
Kegel led the offense for the Mount on the day scoring four goals while recording an assist and a steal against Mercyhurst. Viers, Wilson, and Gebhardt all recorded two goals a piece while Schreurs, Redaelli, Horan, and Davidson added solo scores to the win. Wilson recorded three steals against the Lakers while Natalie Marquiss recorded three field blocks from open play. Fernie recorded five saves in goal while Daniella Cervantes recorded two saves in goal during the last quarter of play.
 
Day two of the invitational for the Mountaineers started against McKendree, with the Mount jumping out to a early 4-1 lead over the Bearcats after the first quarter. Goals from Lotte SchreursAnna KegelLeilani Horan, and Taylor Wilson proved to be the deciding factor in the quarter win. Horan and Wilson scored again during the second quarter followed by a goal from Emily Hatcher, sending the Mountaineers into halftime with a commanding 7-2 lead.
 
Mount St. Mary's continued their offensive push in the third quarter as Schreurs and Lucia Redaelli matched McKendree's two goals in the quarter, heading into the final period up 9-4. McKendree found some scoring form in the final quarter, scoring four against the Mountaineer defensive wall. But goals from Breanna Wood and Claire Gebhardt cancelled out any serious push for a comeback in the end.
 
Schreurs, Horan, and Wilson all recorded two goals for the Mount while Redaelli, Hatcher, Kegel, Gebhardt, and Wood recorded solo scores. Natalie Marquiss recorded three steals against opponents while Hatcher and Kiele Davidson drew two exclusions each. Olivia Fernie recorded six saves in goal against the Bearcats.
 
Michigan held the Mountaineers scoreless through the first quarter of play while blasting four shots past the Mount defense for a early 4-0 lead. Schreurs and Kali Viers found the net in the second half, but a persistent Michigan offense took the game into halftime up 8-2. Kegel found the net in the third and forth quarters, rounding out the game for the Mountaineers. Fernie completed five saves in goal against the Wolverines.
 
ALL-TIME RECORDS
 
The Mountaineers have 1-0 records against both Chapman and Fullerton, with the Mountaineers having beat the Titans by a score of 9-8 on February 28, 2025 while recording a 16-9 win against Chapman on March 2, 2024. This weekend will play host to the first ever meetings between both Whittier and Biola against the Mount in program history.
