Koerner Homers, Mount Falls to Fairfield in Series Opener, 6-2

Box Score Fairfield, Conn. (March 20, 2026)—Mount St. Mary's dropped the opening game of a three-game series at Fairfield, 6-2, on Friday afternoon. Tristin Koerner homered while Gina Del Giorno added two hits in the game for the Mountaineers.

Koerner belted her solo home run to lead off the top of the second inning to put the Mount (5-17, 2-1 MAAC) in front, 1-0.  It is Koerner's second long ball of the season.  The Stags took the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Ava Armuth went all the way to third on an error, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the score.  Delaney Whieldon added a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored the go-ahead run on Sammie Dougherty's RBI single.

The Mount threatened to tie the score in the fourth.  Emma Tawney was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on a groundout.  Tawney, however, was thrown out at the plate on Sharon Manni's squeeze bunt.  Lia Festa followed with a base hit to left, moving to second on a throw to third to put a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs.  A strikeout ended the threat.

Fairfield (8-14, 4-2 MAAC) sealed the win with a run in the fourth on a Armuth RBI single, and three more runs in the fifth.  Chela Kovar had the big hit, a two-run double that pushed the Fairfield advantage to 5-1.  Martina Gutierrez rounded out the scoring in the fifth with an RBI base hit.

The Mount staged a two-out rally in the seventh, bringing the tying runner to the plate.  Taylor Williams singled with two outs, and scored on an Avery Dinges double to the gap in left-center field.  Del Giorno followed with a base hit and Kelsie Bandelow walked to load the bases.  Fairfield pitcher Alyssa Weinberg ended the threat with a strikeout.

Emmaleigh Zagrodnicheck took the loss for the Mount, allowing six runs (four earned) in the complete-game effort.  She struck out four while walking five in the game.  Del Giorno went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Mount while Dinges was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and her 19th stolen base of the season.  Koerner finished 1-for-4 with a solo home run.

The Mount and Fairfield complete the three-game series tomorrow with a noon doubleheader at Fairfield's Alumni Softball Field.
