Farmville, Va. (March 1, 2025)—Mount St. Mary's softball earned a split of today's games on the final day of the Bank of the James Invitational. The Mount opened the day with a 4-1 win over Hampton before falling to host Longwood in a slugfest, 18-10, in the final game of the tournament.
In the opening game, Mount St. Mary's snapped its long losing streak with a 4-1 win over Hampton.
Sophia Schmehl picked up the win in the circle with
Ellie Meier finishing the game to earn the save.
In the bottom of the first inning,
Avery Dinges walked, moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher, and scored on
Gina Del Giorno's base hit. The Mount added a run in the second when
Lia Festa doubled and then scored on
Sharon Manni's RBI single.
After Hampton scored in the top of the third to cut the advantage to 2-1, the Mount scored twice in the third to make it 4-1.
Lia Festa's RBI groundout brought home the first run, and
Courtney Chew made it a three-run lead with an RBI single.
Schmehl and Meier were able to keep Hampton off the board the rest of the way to secure the win.
In the second game, Longwood scored seven runs in each of the first two innings, and held off a Mount rally for the 18-10 victory in five innings.
Tristin Koerner went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI while Peyten De Weese had a pair of hits in the win. Dinges went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two stolen bases with
Maya Alvarez chipping in a pair of runs batted in.
The Mount is back in action next weekend with the opening of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Mount St. Mary's hosts Merrimack for a three-game series beginning with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
