ANNAPOLIS, Md. (September 13, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's men's water polo won two of their three Saturday matches at the Navy Open on Saturday, defeating Salem and Connecticut College while falling to MIT by a score of 15-14 in overtime. With their two wins, the Mountaineers improve to a record 4-7 while going 2-2 in the state's capital this weekend.
Saturday started with a 22-16 victory over Salem in Lejeune Hall. A close 6-5 first quarter win was capped off with goals from
William Matthews and
Nikolaos Agritelis while
Aaron Tarr and
Ioannis Skliras posted two goals in the period. Skliras continued the second quarter with good form, scoring two while
Nate Valentine got on the scorecard. The Greek continued his first half scoring in the third, firing three more goals into the net while Tarr, Valentine,
Chrysostomos Valavanis, and
Jack Fox all got on the scorecard. Tarr added three more goals in the fourth, followed by two more from Skliras and a solo from Valavanis to cap off a monstrous game for the Mount offense.
The Mountaineers got off to a good start against MIT in game two, with Skliras finding the net twice and
Alexandros Belesis finding goal for a 3-1 quarter lead against the Engineers. A combination of goals from Valavanis and Tarr tied the second quarter at 2-2 while Fox, Skliras, and Valavanis once again scored goals in 5-5 tied third quarter, with Belesis notching his hat trick in the third. A resurgent MIT offense scored four in the fourth, but two crucial goals from Belesis and Fox forced overtime in Annapolis. Matthews found the net twice in the extra period, but with a three-goal showing in overtime from MIT, the Mountaineers fell 15-14 in game two of the evening.
Matthews continued his good run of offensive form in game three, opening the game against Connecticut College with two goals in the first quarter. Six goals from
Gunner Lanquist,
Aidan Zieger Fox, Skliras, and two goals from Matthews helped the Mount to a 8-1 lead at halftime against the Camels.
Max Economy, Lanquist, Matthews and Tarr added goals in the third and fourth while Valavanis scored a fourth quarter hat trick, rounding out a 20-12 victory for the Mount in game three.

The Mountaineers travel to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania next weekend for the Bucknell Invitational, taking on Salem and LIU on September 20 while restarting their MAWPC schedule with a game against Fordham on September 21.
