EMMITSBURG, Md. (August 29, 2025) – Staying at Waldron Family Stadium for the Labor Day holiday, Mount St. Mary's women's soccer hosts the Delaware State Hornets in a Sunday matinee.
MOUNT UPDATE
In an electrifying second half, the Mountaineers rallied to take their first win of the season – a 2-1 victory over the Shepherd Rams.
Joelle Hamel equalized the match on a penalty, and
Cassidy Nichols scored the game winner in the 78
th minute. Nichols now leads the team with two goals, and Hamel joins her and
Taylor Simmons as a goal scorer.
Abigail Makela added a save to her tally, bringing her season total to 13. The victory gave head coach
Liis Abbott her first career win in the top coaching job.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Delaware State comes into Emmitsburg also riding high, winning two of their first three matches. The Hornets won the opener 1-0 against Alabama A&M, and defeated Temple 2-1 in their most recent game. Nicole Cargill leads the team with four points off two goals, and Yazmeen Smith also scored for the Hornets this year. Three goalies have shared duties in net, led by 13 saves from Johoanna Hornyak.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
The Mountaineers hold a 7-3-2 advantage over the Hornets, including a 2-0 win in Dover last August.
Erin Antone and
Sydoney Clarke scored in the victory. Delaware State earned wins each year from 2014-16 and draws in 2017 and 2018.
LOOKING AHEAD
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play begins September 6 when the Mount travels to Merrimack.
