Late Lead Slips Away for Mount Softball

Box Score Hamden, Conn. (April 11, 2025)—A late lead slipped away as Mount St. Mary's lost at Quinnipiac, 3-2, in nine innings in the opening game of a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series on Friday afternoon.  The Mountaineers fall to 8-29 overall and 3-13 in the MAAC.

The Mountaineers struck for a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead.  Grace Kobert singled to lead off the inning, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Del Giorno then posted an infield single, but the throw back to third was able to retire Koberg.  Del Giorno then stole second base, and she scored on Kelsie Bandelow's RBI single up the middle.  Bandelow advanced all the way to third base on the throw.  Koerner then drove a double over the left fielder's glove to make it 2-0.

Quinnipiac (11-11, 6-5 MAAC) got a run back in the fifth on a Kennedy Demott solo home run.  The Bobcats then evened the score in the bottom of the seventh.  Riley Potter led the seventh off with a double, but Mount pitcher Sophia Schmehl got the next two outs.  Demott, however, came through with an RBI single to left to tie the score.  A walk and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with two outs.  Schmehl was able to induce a groundout to second to send the game to extra innings.  The Bobcats earned the win on a Demott two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.

The teams will complete the three-game series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
