Emmitsburg, MD (April 10, 2025) – The Mount St. Mary's women's rugby team had a successful Sunday (April 6), winning games against Harvard, West Chester University, and Dartmouth.
Mount St. Mary's vs. Harvard
The Mount started the day against Harvard and held them scoreless in the first half.
Anita Manglona's try in the first half gave the Mount five points. Harvard began the second half with their only try of the match, a minute into the second half.
Savannah Short and
Shaniah Mayers quickly moved off a scrum, allowing
Olivia Woodward to score a try right between the posts.
Shaniah Mayers made the kick, giving the lead back to the Mount. After Harvard kicked off to Mount,
Neely Denlinger scored another try for the Mount, and after a
Shaniah Mayers kick, the Mountaineers won, 19-5.
Mount St. Mary's vs. Dartmouth
The Mountaineers started with possession at the beginning of their second game. After multiple exchanged possessions between the teams, Dartmouth attempted to steal the ball from the Mountaineers but were called for an offside penalty.
Savannah Short gained 50 yards for the Mount off a scrum, but after a Mount penalty, the half ended 0-0. In the second half, neither team was able to take ground from the other. More exchanges of possessions and Dartmouth violations created an opportunity for
Caliann Dietz to intercept the ball from Dartmouth. After a "not straight" throw-in by Dartmouth,
Anita Manglona did a quick play to score a 40-meter try for the Mountaineers. After a missed kick from
Shaniah Mayers, the Mount's defense held strong, shutting out Dartmouth 5-0.
Mount St. Mary's vs. West Chester University of Pennsylvania
The Mount began their final game of the day with a hot start.
Neely Denlinger received a kick and made a breakaway run 23 seconds into the game. Shainah Mayers converted the kick, giving the Mount an early 7-0 lead. The Mount kicked the ball to West Chester, where
Olivia Woodward brought the ball into touch.
Anita Manglona ran the ball 20 meters before the ball was swung to
Olivia Woodward, who scored another try for the Mountaineers. Once the ball was knocked back to West Chester,
Caliann Dietz was able to steal it from a ruck. The ball made its way back to
Olivia Woodward, who scored her second try in the contest. At the end of the first half, the Mount held the lead, 19-0. At the beginning of the second half, neither team could make headway, and the ball changed possession multiple times. The Mount's
Riley Sibilia was able to make a play halfway through the second half, outrunning the defense and scoring a try. After a
Shaniah Mayers converted kick, West Chester scored a quick try, preventing the shutout. The Mount took the strong win, 26-5.
