Box Score 2 Niagara University, N.Y. (April 1, 2025)---Mount St. Mary's split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader at Niagara on Tuesday afternoon. The Mount rebounded for a 5-2 victory in game two after falling to the Purple Eagles, 5-2, in the opener.
The Mount (8-23, 3-7 MAAC) used a two-out rally to score four times in the top of the third inning to take control of the second game.
Kelsie Bandelow walked ahead of a
Laurenne Gallagher base hit.
Brianna Manni followed by lacing an RBI single to center to give Mount St. Mary's a 1-0 advantage.
Tristin Koerner provided the big hit, a three-run blast to center field to make it a four-run lead. Koerner has a team-leading three home runs this season.
The Mountaineers added to the lead in the fourth when freshman
Grace Koberg and
Lia Festa singled, and Koberg was able to score on a
Gina Del Giorno RBI groundout. Niagara scored twice in the sixth for the final score of 5-2.
Ellie Meier pitched five scoreless innings to move to 4-4 on the season, striking out three while allowing just four hits in the victory.
Olivia Murphy pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs. Koerner went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Mount in the win while Koberg added a 2-for-2 day.
In the opening game, Mount St. Mary's opened the scoring when Gallagher homered to lead off the top of the second. It is Gallagher's second long ball of the season. The Purple Eagles (3-16, 1-4 MAAC) answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Sophia Marrero's RBI single tied the score, and with runners on second and third, CJ Haney hit a long foul ball to right that was caught by
Gina Del Giorno. Both runners tagged up on the play and were able to score to make it a 3-1 Niagara lead.
Koberg singled up the middle in the top of the fourth to record her first career hit. Niagara's Shayna Mishrall added a two-run double in the fifth to push Niagara's advantage to 5-1.
The Mount got a run back in the top of the sixth. Manni worked a one-out walked, and moved to third on a Gallagher base hit.
Tyra Christian then brought home Manni with a single to left to make it a 5-2 game. Koberg then laced a line drive, but it was snared by the first baseman and turned into a double play to end the threat.
Up next, the Mountaineers head to Iona for a three-game series with weekend beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday.
