Claremont, Calif. (March 1, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo was defeated on Saturday by the combine forces of Loyola Marymount and Pomona-Pitzer on the final day of the Convergence tournaments in California by scores of 17-8 and 9-4 respectively. With the end of their trip out west, the Mountaineers retain a record of 11-6 on the eve of their 2025 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play's start.
In game one against No. 10 Loyola Marymount, the Mountaineers found themselves down early in the first quarter by a score of 6-3 after
Leilani Horan found the back of the cage followed by a pair of goals from
Rebecca Valentine. The Lions put six more past the goalkeeper in the second, beating the Mountaineers 6-2 in the second quarter to take a 12-5 lead into halftime. Horan found the net once more in the third and a combo of goals from
Maria Boix Pascual and
Anna Kegel found the net in the fourth rounding out the rest of the game.
Valentine led the way on defense with a hat trick of goals and one completed steal. Kegel put two past the Loyola Marymount goalkeeper and notched two assists in the match. Solo goals were scored by Horan, Pascual, and
Beatrice Vieira in the match.
Becca Engquist made three saves in goal followed by two saves from
Olivia Fernie.

In game two, the Mount held the Sagehens to a even 2-2 score through the first quarter by goals from Valentine and
Anita Radaelli. The Mountaineers were edged 2-1 heading into the halftime break, but a goal from Pascual kept the contest close. Another 2-1 quarter in favor of Pomona-Pitzer was played out in the third, with the Mount's only goal of the period coming from Valentine. The Mount was held scoreless in the final quarter of the game as the Sagehens scored one on the Mount goal to round out the game in the end.
Valentine once again led the way for the Mountaineers in the pool, scoring a brace while completing a steal. Solo goals were scored by Pascual and Radaelli while both Pascual and Horan notched assists.
Robyn Currie completed two steals and five total field blocks during the contest.
Olivia Fernie made 15 saves for the Mountaineers in the cage during her four quarters of play for the Mount.
