ORANGE, Calif. (February 28, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo split their first day of competition at the Convergence Tournament in California on Friday with a 9-8win over Cal State Fullerton and a 18-7 loss to San Diego State.
Rebecca Valentine scored her 200goal for the program and became the new program record holder of goals scored with 202, surpassing the previous record of 200 set by
Ana Luisa Cotta in 2024. With the day split, the Mount is now 11-4 heading into the second day of the competition.
The first quarter ended in a close contest, with the Mountaineers tying the Titans 1-1 off of a goal by Valentine to notch her 200
th career goal at the Mount. A goal from
Beatrice Vieira was cancelled out by a Fullerton double to head into the halftime intermission down 3-2. The heat in the California breeze was put on in the third quarter as four goals from Valentine, Vieira,
Maria Boix Pascual, and
Anita Radaelli flew into the cage to put the Mount up narrowly 6-5 heading into the final quarter of the match. A even 3-3 contest was played out in the fourth, but goals from Valentine, Pascual, and Radaelli once again proved vital as the win was earned.
Valentine along with her program accolades, notched a hat trick against Fullerton along with five drawn exclusions. Doubles from Vieira, Pascual, and Radaelli rounded out the goal scoring along with three assists from
Anna Kegel.
Olivia Fernie notched 11 saves in goal for the Mount against the Titans in game one of the day.

In the second game of the day, the Mountaineers found themselves down early against San Diego State, loosing the first quarter 5-1 with Vieira scoring the only goal of the quarter. Five goals followed for the Mount in the second quarter, but an evenly matched Aztec's attack in the quarter beat out the Mountaineers 7-5 heading into halftime down 12-6. Four more gals followed for San Diego State in the third compared to the Mount's one goal and a shutout fourth quarter by State sealed the loss for the Mount.
Radaelli scored a brace of goals along with an assist and two completed steals for the Mountaineers in the pool. Solo goals were scored by Vieira, Pascual,
Leilani Horan,
Robyn Currie, and
Hannah Sayre. Fernie made 10 saves in goal against the Aztecs.
