Early Loss to Bucknell Leads to Dominant Win Against Austin for Women’s Water Polo

LEXINGTON, Va. (February 1, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo split their second day of competition at the VMI Invite with a loss to Bucknell 10-9 and a dominant win over Austin, 18-8. With their win against the Kangaroos, the Mountaineers move to 5-2 on the season.
 
To start the match, the Mountaineers played out a 3-2 quarter win for the Bisons followed by  3-1 quarter loss for the Mountaineers to head into halftime down 6-3. The Mount played out to a better 3-1 victory in the third quarter, but Bucknell equaled the Mount's scoring to end the fourth at 3-3-, resulting in a 10-9 defeat.
 
Beatrice Vieira, Anna Kegel, Leilani Horan, and Maria Boix Pascual all slotted away two goals apiece followed by a single goal from Anita Radaelli. Robyn Currie provided a hattrick of assists to her teammates followed by two completed steals. Becca Enquist made eight saves in goal for the Mountaineers.

In the second game of the afternoon against Austin, the Mount started their scoring efforts early, putting six past the Kangaroos in the first quarter while only conceding two. Seven more goals followed in the second to put the Mount up 13-3 heading into halftime. The rest of the game played out to a 2-2 and a 3-3 tie in the third and fourth quarters respectively to round out a massive 18-8 victory.
 
A flurry of Mountaineers scored against Austin, with Horan leading with a hat trick followed by two goals apiece from Pascual, Radaelli, Rebecca Valentine, and Emily Hatcher. Solo contributions came from Vieira, Currie, Kailee Viers, Madison Szczublewski, Riley Thompson, Breanna Wood, and Shelby Diaz. In her second game of the day, Enquist made 13 saves in the cage.
