BRONX, N.Y. (November 21, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's men's water polo fell to George Washington in the first round of the 2025 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference championships on Friday by a score of 16-10. With the loss, the Mountaineers advanced to the consolation rounds, facing off against Mercyhurst tomorrow, November 22.
Starting the game against the Revolutionaries, the Mount got off to a hot start, outscoring GW by a score of 3-2 through the first quarter.
Ioannis Skliras capitalized on a 6-on-5 power play early in the quarter to get the Mountaineers on the board.
Alexandros Belesis scored off a penalty to take an early 2-1 lead followed by an even strength goal from
William Matthews to close the quarter out with a narrow lead.
The Mountaineers took a heavy drubbing int the second quarter against the Revolutionaries, being outscored 7-1 with Valavanis getting a goal within the first minute of the period from the holeset. In the third quarter, a goal from
Aaron Tarr on the counter and a two-goal, hat trick completing run from Matthews continued to aid the Mount offense, cutting the deficit to 12-7 at the end of the quarter.
Tarr scored from the penalty spot to get the Mount's eight goal, starting the fourth quarter. The South African scored once more from open play to complete his three-peat followed by a final goal from Matthews, rounding out the game for the Mount.
Matthews lead the Mount offense with four goals, an assist, and two steals. Tarr recorded three goals against GW while dishing out an assists and completing five steals. And Belesis recorded a goa from play while recording two assists and completing three steals.
Sherif Hosni made nine saves in goal while completing two steals.
