EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 30, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's men's water polo returns to ARCC Swimming Pool on October 31 for a Fright Night Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference match up against Wagner. They return on November 1 for their final slate of home games against Bucknell and Mercyhurst for a Senior day doubleheader.
MOUNT UPDATE
Against Iona on October 24, The Gaels opened up a 2-0 lead to start before a goal from
Chrysostomos Valavanis came in from the hole set to get the Mountaineers on the board. The Mount found themselves down 4-3 with four minutes left on the clock before
William Matthews goal opened the flood gates for the Mountaineers, heading into the first intermission up 6-4.
Goals for the Mountaineers continued in the second quarter, as
Nate Valentine found net while
Alexandros Belesis notched a hat trick in quarter, recording his 300
th career goal for the Mount in the process. Belesis found the net in the third quarter again while scoring the Mount's only goal of the third, holding the Gaels to a 1-1 tie in the third and heading into the final intermission up 11-6.
Matthews recorded third goal of the game to start the final quarter while Belesis,
Ioannis Skliras, and
Ayden Hess all found the net in a 4-4 tied fourth quarter, rounding out a resounding win.
Along with scoring his 300
th career goal, Belesis added five more goals to his season tally against Iona while Skliras and Matthews recorded hattricks. Valentine recorded a brace in the pool while Valavanis and Hess recorded solo scores.
Aaron Tarr recorded four assists while drawing two exclusions. And in goal,
Sherif Hosni recorded 13 saves while providing an assist from deep.
Against George Washington, the duo of
Nate Valentine and
Nikolaos Agritelis led the Mount's offense, each recording four goals. Valentine struck early more often, while Agritelis played a pivotal role in forcing overtime.
Aaron Tarr and
Alexandros Belesis added multi-goal performances, and
Sherif Hosni finished the contest with eight saves.
George Washington grabbed the early advantage with a 4-2 first quarter, then maintained it by playing even through the second and third. Late goals by Agritelis and
William Matthews in the third sparked a 4-0 Mount run, capped by Agritelis tying the game at 11-11 with 6:06 remaining. The teams traded goals down the stretch, with Agritelis equalizing three times, including the one that forced overtime at the 1:29 mark.
Each side found the net once in the first overtime, with
Chrysostomos Valavanis leveling the score before the buzzer. In the second session, Joseph McCreary scored what proved to be the game-winner, and Adonis Vlassis added an insurance goal at the final horn for the Revolutionaries.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Through 20 games of the 2025 season, Wagner has compiled an overall record of 9-11, with a record of 1-3 in the MAWPC. Victories for the Seahawks include wins against LIU, MIT, Iona, Mercyhurst, Chapman, and George Washington.
Bucknell have recorded a record of 8-14 through their 22 games played in 2025, with a 4-5 record in the MAWPC. Conference wins for the Bisons have come against Wagner, Mount St. Mary's, and a pair of wins against Mercyhurst.
And Mercyhurst have recorded a 1-17 record so far through the duration of their 2025 schedule, with their sole win coming in the form of a 17-11 victory against Washington and Jefferson on October 25 in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
