EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 23, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's men's water polo opens their 2025 home slate of games this weekend with a Friday night match up against Iona followed by a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference game against George Washington on Saturday. With their win against Mercyhurst on October 11, the Mountaineers snapped a four game MAWPC losing streak while building steam for the rest of their conference match ups.
MOUNT UPDATE
In game one of October 11 against the Lakers, the Mountaineers got things running, winning the first quarter by a score of 3-2. A 5-1 quarter win played out during the second, guaranteeing an 8-3 lead heading into halftime for the Mount. The Mountaineers won the third quarter by a score of 3-1 and although the Lakers put up five goals in the fourth, the Mountaineers held on, guaranteeing the win.
Aaron Tarr put five past the Mercyhurst defense while aiding in an assist and a completed steal.
Nate Valentine recorded a hat trick against the Lakers while also recording a hat trick of assists.
William Matthews scored two goals, recorded two assists and completed three steals. And a combination of
Max Economy,
Jack Fox, and
Carson Owens all recorded a goal a piece in the first game of the day.
Sherif Hosni recorded 14 saves in goal for the Mountaineers against the Lakers.
Against Bucknell, the Mountaineers found themselves down at the first intermission, losing the quarter 3-1. The Mount made things interesting before halftime, scoring four goals but allowing seven, going down 10-5 at halftime. The Mountaineers held Bucknell to a 2-1 third quarter and won the fourth quarter by a score of 3-1, but the early scores by the Bison half off the visitors.
Tarr once again had a fantastic game in the pool, notching six goals against Bucknell. A combination of Fox,
Alexandros Belesis, and
Ioannis Skliras recorded a goal a piece while Matthews recorded three steals. Hosni recorded 17 saves in goal against the Bisons.
For his actions in Lewisburg, Hosni was named the MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week for the forth time in 2025. The goalkeeper from Hamilton, New Zealand recorded 31 saves in goal against the Lakers and Bisons while recording three steals and one assist.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Through 16 games played in 2025, the Gaels have yielded a 6-10 record with a 3-2 record in the Northeast Water Polo Conference. Iona have recorded wins against Gannon, Redlands, MIT, Brown, LIU, and Connecticut College.
George Washington have played out to a 12-12 record so far through the 2025 season while recording a MAWPC record of 5-2. Notable wins for the Revolutionaries include No. 15 UC Santa Barbara, DIII No. 8 MIT, Bucknell, Salem, and Occidental.

The Mountaineers are 1-1 against Iona, with their last match up against the Gaels on September 3, 2022 ending in a 13-12 overtime victory for the Mount. Mount St. Mary's is 0-9 against George Washington.
