LEXINGTON, Va. (January 31, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's men's water polo took away a win in their first match of the VMI Invitational ON Friday in a 16-12 overtime win against Saint Francis. Their win against the Red Flash moves them to 4-1 on the season.
To start the match, the Mount went ahead early with a penalty slotted away by
Anna Kegel to open up the scoring in the pool. But exclusion trouble for the team led to a 4-3 lead for Saint Francis headed into the first intermission. Another close quarter was played out in the second, with the Mount edging Saint Francis 3-2 heading into the halftime break up tied 6-6. The third quarter played host to five goals scored by the Mountaineers, but three scores by the Red Flash held the game close heading into the final quarter of regulation.
A hotly contested fourth quarter was played out, with Saint Francis winning the final period of regulation 3-1, eventually tying the game up 12-12, forcing overtime. Three goals in the first overtime and a solo in the second lead to a 4-0 shutout in overtime and a 16-12 win for the Mountaineers to head into their Sunday doubleheader with a 4-1 record.
Rebecca Valentine put away four goals during the game followed by hat tricks from Kegel and
Maria Boix Pascual. Along with her two goals,
Anita Radaelli provided four assists to her teammates and completed five steals against the Red Flash. And
Becca Enquist recorded 10 saves in goal for the Mountaineers.
