EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 17, 2024) – One last match out of conference awaits Mount St. Mary's women's soccer, as they travel to UMBC for a Wednesday evening contest.
MOUNT UPDATE
Taking the long trip to Siena last Saturday, the Mountaineers fell by a 5-1 score.
Anika Sproxton scored the team's goal off a penalty, improving to 2-of-2 for the season. With the defeat, the Mount fell to 0-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
An objective for the team going into Wednesday's game will be a return to defensive prowess. After conceding three goals across five games, the Mountaineers have given up eight in the past two. Once ahead of opponents in the goal count, they now trail 11-9. Freshman goalkeeper

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS
A victory over Longwood this past Sunday gave UMBC a 3-4 record entering the match. In addition to defeating the Lancers, the Retrievers also took victories against Iona and Howard. Six goals are scattered among six players, with Izzy Binko and Payton Schenning contributing assists as well to lead in the points column. Three goalies have shared net duties, with Abby Cowles earning the most starts and highest number of saves.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Wednesday marks the 20
th time Mount and UMBC have competed in women's soccer. The Retrievers hold the all-time lead, 14-5, but the Mountaineers have taken the past two matches. A header from
Annie Sorando with only a few minutes to spare netted the team a 2-1 victory last season.
LOOKING AHEAD
MAAC play resumes Saturday (Sept. 21) as the Mountaineers welcome Marist to Emmitsburg. Kickoff is 1 p.m. from Waldron Family Stadium.
