EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 12, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's returns to the pool at the Salem Invitational this weekend starting on Saturday at 2:40 p.m. against Gannon. They continue their tournament play on Saturday as they take on LIU at 5:20 p.m. On Sunday, the Mount continues the tournament, taking on host Salem at 12:00 p.m. and at 2:40 p.m. against Mercyhurst.
Mount Update
Entering the weekend, the Mount holds an overall record of 1-4 with a Mid Atlantic Water Polo Conference record of 0-1. Having competed last weekend at the Navy Open, they picked up a win against McKendree by a score of 18-14. They then fell in succession to Occidental, Navy, Gannon, and Biola. They were outscored by their opponents 77-61 across the open.
Alexandros Bellesis and
Chrysostomos Valavanis led the scoring efforts for the Mount, as they scored 15 goals and 10 goals respectively in Annapolis. Graduate student
Vasilije Marinkovic notched 17 saves in goal during his debut weekend for the Mount.
The Opponents
Gannon also featured at the Navy open this past weekend, where they collected a record of 2-1 with a 19-18 win against Johns Hopkins and a 14-12 win against the Mount. Their only loss came 20-8 against the hosts Navy.
LIU featured at the Bruno Classic in Providence, Rhode Island this past weekend where they accrued a record of 1-3 with losses to Air Force, Iona, and Wagner. They won their second game of the weekend, beating Austin 17-7.
Salem, recorded a 2-2 record at the Navy Open last weekend with a 15-7 win against Biola and a 22-17 win against Johns Hopkins. Their only losses came against Navy, which ended in a 13-9 win in favor of the Midshipmen and a 16-15 loss to George Washington.
Mercyhurst faces the Mount after going winless in Annapolis, collecting a record of 0-3 across the weekend with losses to George Washington, ending in 17-8, a 21-18 loss to Johns Hopkins, and a 16-6 loss to Occidental.
All-Time Record
The Mountaineers are 4-5 against Gannon, 3-4 against Salem, and 8-0 against Mercyhurst. This weekend will mark the first meeting between the Mount and LIU in Men's Water Polo.
