EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 5, 2024) – As the calendar turns to April, Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse hopes to make a claim at a tournament spot for the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) playoffs. Hoping to start on a high note, the team hosts Marist Saturday.
MOUNT UPDATE
Last Saturday featured a solid showing against the ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats. The favored 'Cats needed a strong fourth quarter to overcome the Mountaineers' challenge, ultimately winning 15-10.
Brody Atkinson collected his third consecutive hat trick during the game, and
Dan Bradley led with a pair of caused turnovers. Atkinson became the first Mount player to score 20 goals for the season, and Bradley stands third for CT's behind
Mitchell Dunham and
Jackson Phillips.
Despite the 1-4 start to MAAC play, Mount St. Mary's stands one game back for the playoffs in a tight race for the final two qualifying spots. At present, VMI and Siena hold those positions with 2-3 records.
SCOUTING THE RED FOXES
The 2023 MAAC Tournament Champions, Marist is also looking to overturn a 1-4 start and get back into playoff contention. Joshua Balcarcel and Jake Deacy tag team for 18 goals each, leading a group of six Red Foxes in double figures for goals. Aiden McCaffrey heads the defensive unit with 29 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers. Dylan Bedell has won more than half his faceoff attempts, taking 132 of 256 attempts.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Dating back to 1991, Mount St. Mary's and Marist have faced off 23 times over the past three-plus decades. The Mountaineers hold the upper hand all-time with 15 wins. In 2023,
Kelly Gouin scored a hat trick and was one of nine Mount players to score in a 12-9 regular season victory. Marist flipped the script in the postseason, advancing to the MAAC Championship by defeating the Mount 19-7.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
On April 10, the Mount hits the road one last time in the regular season as they travel to Buffalo for a game with Canisius.
