Mount St. Mary's Softball Downed by Canisius

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Buffalo, N.Y. (March 24, 2024)—On a cold afternoon in Buffalo, the Mount St. Mary's softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at Canisius on Sunday.  The Golden Griffins took the opening game, 6-0, before capturing an 11-0 win in game two.

In the opening game, one inning proved to be the difference in a 6-0 loss to the Golden Griffins (7-10, 2-0 MAAC).  Canisius broke the game open by scoring all six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to earn the win.

Mount St. Mary's starter Olivia Murphy was matching Canisius pitcher Megan Giese as the score remained scoreless heading into the bottom of the fourth.  In the fourth, Giese helped herself by driving in the first two runs with a double.  A Madysen Burkey RBI single extended the lead while an error allowed another runner to score for a 4-0 advantage.  Christie McGee-Ross made it 5-0 with an RBI groundout and a Gabbi Farris single brought home the final run of the inning.

The Mount (6-16, 0-2 MAAC) loaded the bases in the fifth on singles from Elizabeth King and Kassidy Johnson and a hit batsmen to Laurenne Gallagher.  Giese, however, got out of the jam with a strikeout.

Murphy struck out four while allowing four earned runs in 3.1 innings of work while Sophia Schmehl pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Mountaineers.

Canisius (7-10, 2-0 MAAC) struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control of game two.  Rosie Gomez and an RBI single and Emily Ilano added a run-producing two-base hit.  The Golden Griffins added to the leadl with five runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by an Ilano three-run homer.  Canisius sealed the win with a four-run fourth.

Julia Vincent had the Mount's lone hit in game two.  Coleman allowed six runs in 2.1 innings in her start in game two while Amaya Bowman allowed five runs in 1.2 innings of relief.  Giese pitched both games for Canisius, striking out 14 in the two games while allowing just three hits and no runs.

The Mount returns to action next weekend with a three-game MAAC series at home against Siena at Our Lady of the Meadows Field.  The series starts with a doubleheader at noon on Friday, March 29.
