EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 9, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball prepares to welcome the Canisius Golden Griffins to Knott Arena, with both teams setting their sights on making moves in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings.
Mount has a 5-7 record in league play, which is good for seventh place, but they sit two games behind Canisius and Quinnipiac. The Golden Griffins are within striking distance of a top four spot, one game behind Manhattan in the field.
MOUNT UPDATE
Hosting Rider last Thursday, the Mountaineers posted their largest margin of victory this season, defeating the Broncs 64-43.
Isabella Hunt scored a career-high 21 points and earned her sixth career double-double.
Jada Lee cracked the program's top 100 list with 14 points and earned five steals to move into the top 100 nationally for steals per game.
Jo Raflo finished with 12 points, giving the junior 500 for her career.
Since beginning MAAC play by dropping four games, the team has gone 5-3 since. Offense has increased upwards of 56 points per game as the Mount continues to find solutions for scoring. Defense is even more stout, now standing 71
st in the country after holding Rider to a season low for Mount opponents.
SCOUTING CANISIUS
The Golden Griffins rebounded from a two-game losing streak last weekend by beating Saint Peter's to remain on the winning side record wise. Canisius also benefits from being on the bye February 8. Sisi Eleko continues to average a double-double for the team, alongside a triple threat of three-point shooters in Athina Lexa, Mackenzie Amalia, and Grace Heeps. Combined with teammates' percentages, Canisius is the top three-point team in the MAAC.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
After nine games, Mount St. Mary's holds a 6-3 lead in the series and a 3-1 mark in the MAAC. Canisius got their first win since the Mount joined the conference last month, winning a 62-49 decision in Buffalo. The series dates to 1991.
LOOKING AHEAD
Next week, the Mountaineers travel to Quinnipiac Thursday (Feb. 15) before hosting MAAC leader Fairfield Saturday (Feb. 17).
