Dakota Leffew topped 1,000 career points as Mount St. Mary's held off Siena, 68-61, on Sunday afternoon at MVP Arena. The win gives the Mount a weekend sweep of its MAAC road trip, improving the record to 9-13 overall and 5-6 in the MAAC.
Leffew, who entered the game needing six points to become the 50
th player in Mount history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, achieved the feat with a pull-up jumper from the baseline with 5:13 left in the opening half. The senior guard finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and four blocks in the game, and he moved past three players into 48
th on the Mount's scoring list with 1,007 career markers.
Adebayo matched his career high of 16 points set against Rider last weekend, finishing with 16 points and seven boards in the victory. The Mount's trio of freshman,
De'Shayne Montgomery,
Dallas Hobbs and
Ronald Jessamy each scored eight in the win.
Seina's Michael Eley led all scorers with 24 points while Michael Ojo added 14 in the loss. The Mount held Siena's leading scorer, Sean Durugordon, to eight points on 3-of-18 shooting in the game. Durugordon entered the game averaging 23.2 points per contest.
After Siena took an early 6-4 lead, the Mount responded with the next 11 points for a 15-to-6 advantage. Leffew hit a three-pointer to break a 6-6- tie, and
Dallas Hobbs followed with a three-pointer of his own. Adebayo connected on a traditional three-point play to cap the run.
Leading 23-15, the Mount scored the next seven points to push the advantage to 30-15, and held its biggest lead of the first half, 33-17, after Hobbs hit his second three-pointer of the half. Siena cut the margin to eight, but the Mount responded and held a 43-31 lead at the break.
An 8-0 Mount run in the second half made it a 16-point advantage again at 54-38. After a Siena bucket, a Hobbs drive made it 56-40 before the Saints made a run. Siena scored the next eight points to get back into the game, trimming the deficit to 62-59 after a Durugordon lay-up with 2:48 on the clock. Each team came up empty on their next two possessions before Montgomery came through with a clutch jumper to put the Mount up 64-59 with just under a minute left. The Mount forced a turnover, and Leffew sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
