Box Score 2 Chapel Hill, N.C. (February 25, 2024)--Abigayle Perry blasted a walk-off three-run home run to lead Mount St. Mary's past George Washington, 4-1, on Sunday morning at the Carolina Classic. The Mount rallied from a one-run sixth-inning deficit to earn the team's second win of the season. The Mountaineers fell to North Carolina, 8-0, in five innings in the nightcap.
With the score tied in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Brianna Manni opened the frame with a single to shortstop. After a popout,
Laurenne Gallagher reached on an error by the shortstop to put runners on first and second with one out. Perry followed with the three-run homer to give the Mount the 4-1 win.
The Mount (2-6) tied the score in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Elizabeth King drew a two-out walk, and pinch runner
Gina Del Giorno stole second base.
Tristin Koerner then came through with a clutch base hit to plate Del Giorno with the tying run. George Washington had taken the lead with an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning.
Maddie Coleman picked up the win for the Mountaineers, tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Starting pitcher
Sophia Schmehl provided a solid start for the Mount, allowing an unearned run and just three hits in 4.2 innings of work.
The Mount closed the tournament with an 8-0 loss to North Carolina in five innings in the nightcap.
North Carolina struck for a run in the bottom of the first on an Isabela Emerling bases load single. It could have been a much bigger inning, but Mount St. Mary's pitcher
Amaya Bowman came on in relief with no outs and the bases loaded and escaped the jam with a pair of strikeouts and a grounder to third. The Tar Heels took control with a five-run third highlighted by an Autumn Owen two-run homer.

The Mount is next in action at Jane Sanders Classic hosted by the University of Oregon. The Mount plays Washington and Oregon on Thursday, Feb. 29, to open the tournament.
