Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (November 4, 2024)--Mount St. Mary's rolled to a 98-62 win over Notre Dame of Maryland in the season opener on Monday night at Knott Arena. The win was the first career victory for Mount St. Mary's head coach
Donny Lind, who was named the 23rd head coach in Mount history in April.
Dallas Hobbs led five Mountaineers in double figures with 17 points while
Jedy Cordilia and Terrell Ard, Jr., each recorded double-doubles in the win.
The Mount opened the game on an 11-2 run with Hobbs capping the run with the final four points. The Gators cut the deficit to 13-11 behind three K'Won Johnson three-pointers, but the Mount regained control with a 20-to-7 stretch for a 15-point advantage. Mount St. Mary's was able to maintain the double-digit margin, taking a 45-31 lead to the locker room. Hobbs scored the first seven points of the second half to give the Mount (1-0) a 52-31 advantage. A late 24-to-2 scoring run gave the Mount its biggest lead of the game at 92-49.
Hobbs finished the game with 17 points and five assists, hitting 7-of-13 from the field. Cordilia added 14 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks while Ard, Jr., had 12 points and 14 boards for the Mountaineers.
Dola Adebayo chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds while freshman
Abdou Khadre Kébé had 10 points and three steals in his collegiate debut.
Xavier Lipscomb returned to the Mount's starting lineup after missing all but two games last year with a broken foot, finishing with four points and a team-high seven assists. Redshirt freshman
Jonathan Ogunfuye (two points and three rebounds) and freshman
Trey Wilson (eight points, three rebounds, two blocks) also recorded their first collegiate points in the victory. Also making their Mount St. Mary's debut were transfers
Carmelo Pacheco (four points, three assists),
Javon Ervin (three points) and
Arlandus Keyes (six points, four assists).
Mount St. Mary's shot 55.0 percent (33-of-60) from the field and 80.0 percent (24-of-30) at the line in the win. The Mount held a 51-to-33 edge on the boards and had 21 assists in the contest. Turnovers were a problem for both teams as the Mount had 24 and Notre Dame of Maryland 21 in the game. Johnson and Jermaine Koger, Jr., each scored 15 points to lead the Gators in the contest.
NOTEBOOK:
- The Mount improves to 59-57 all-time in season openers.
- This was the first time in 26 years that Mount St. Mary's opened the season at home, dating back to a 92-88 overtime win over LaSalle on Nov. 14, 1998.
- The 39-point point win as the Mount's largest margin of victory since a 98-59 win over Sacred Heart on January 21, 2022. The 98 points scored are the most in a game since that 98-point effort against Sacred Heart as well.
- Terrell Ard, Jr., finished with 14 rebounds, tied for the most in a season opener by a Mountaineer in the Mount's Division I era (since 1988-89). Michael Watson had 14 rebounds against Central Connecticut in the season opener on December 3, 1993.
- Jedy Cordilia (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Ard, Jr. (12 points, 14 rebounds) each finished with a double-double for the Mountaineers. It is the first time the Mount had a pair of double-doubles in the same game since Feb. 21, 2021 when Damian Chong Qui (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Mezie Offurum (22 points, 13 rebounds) achieved the feat.
