EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 22, 2024) – Two teams tied in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings meet to try and further cement a position in the playoffs as Mount St. Mary's women's soccer battles Iona.
Entering the match, the two teams are tied for sixth place in the MAAC table along with Marist, Sacred Heart, and Merrimack. While neither side can clinch a berth in the postseason outright following the game, three points will go a long way with two contests remaining.
MOUNT UPDATE
This past Saturday, the Mountaineers pulled off their most impressive victory of the season – a 2-0 triumph over the first place Quinnipiac Bobcats.
Taylor Simmons and
Kayla Pennington scored against a defense that had kept opponents off the scoreboard since August 31.
Adelaide Paredes and the defense ensured a clean sheet, with the freshman goalkeeper registering five saves. Paredes received Rookie of the Week honors from the MAAC for the efforts, taking a weekly award for the second time this season.
Hitting the road for the first time since October 9, the team is coming off a challenging three-game homestand against the top three teams in the MAAC. They emerged with four more points, adding a draw with Canisius to the Quinnipiac win.
SCOUTING THE GAELS
Iona has collected points in each of their last four matches, defeating Rider and Saint Peter's while earning draws with Niagara and Marist. The Gaels have 21 goals for the season, which are two ahead of the Mount's total. Marissa Graziano and Payton Foster lead the goal count with five each, with Graziano leading in points on her own thanks to five assists. Kayla Kalbaugh headlines a group of four keepers that have seen time in the net.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Over four games, the series stands at 1-1-2 with the Mount going 0-1-1 against the Gaels in MAAC play. The draw came in 2022 with the Mountaineers' win coming in non-conference action back in 2011.
LOOKING AHEAD
One final regular season match at home awaits Mount St. Mary's this Saturday (Oct. 26), a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Merrimack Warriors.
