EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 3, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball begins 2024 and resumes Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play with their longest league trip of the season. Their first of two games in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls region is a morning game versus Canisius.
MOUNT UPDATE
Finding a reset after dropping four games, the Mount hosted Bryn Athyn in an exhibition contest, winning by a 101-37 final.
Jaedyn Jamison went 6-for-8 from the floor – all three pointers – with three foul shots for 21 points.
Jo Raflo and
KC Carter also reached double figures, and
Tessa Engelman pulled in 10 rebounds.
Defense helped limit the Lady Lions to 21 percent from the field, forcing 32 turnovers with 18 steals and seven blocks, unsurprising for a team third in the MAAC for points allowed. On the offense side of the ball, the Mount continued to work out solutions for scoring, with a 50 percent registered against the Division III opponent helping to drive that mission.
SCOUTING CANISIUS
Pieces are coming together for Coach Sahar Nusseibeh and the Golden Griffins. After 15 wins across two seasons, Canisius stands 7-4 and have won their first two MAAC games. The team is led by Sisi Eleko who has registered double-doubles in seven of 11 contests. Thanks in large measure to the trio of Athina Lexa, Mackenzie Amalia, and Grace Heeps, Canisius is tops for shooting three-pointers making 37.5 percent of all attempts.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Thursday marks the ninth all-time meeting between the Mountaineers and the Golden Griffins, and the fourth since joining the MAAC. The Mount won all three contests last season which included a 54-41 win at the conference tournament in March. Canisius earned their two wins in the series out of conference, defeating the Mount at the Koessler Center in 2001 and 2008.
LOOKING AHEAD
The second leg of the Buffalo trip takes place Saturday (Jan. 6) at Niagara. Game time is 2 p.m. at the Gallagher Center.
