EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 27, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo got off to a 2-0 start for the 2024 season with defeats of Mercyhurst and Gannon Saturday on the campus of Villanova University. The Mount won 14-7 over the Lakers and 15-10 over the Golden Knights.
Mara Davis and
Heather Lock scored the most goals on the first day with five apiece.
Ana Luisa Cotta earned a hat trick in the Mercyhurst contest. Goalkeepers
Olivia Fernie and
Hannah Keyser split duties with one game each, as Fernie tallied eight saves and Keyser seven.
Anita Radaelli finished with nine steals in her first pair of collegiate games.
The Mountaineers stayed consistent on offense throughout the day, scoring between three and four goals every quarter. This allowed them to build a 7-3 lead over the Lakers and a 7-4 edge over the Golden Knights. On defense the competition only scored more than twice in a quarter once with a four-goal showing by Gannon in the third quarter.
Mount St. Mary's starts 2-0 for the second straight season.
Sunday features the Mountaineers taking on Villanova and Iona. Game times are 10:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
