EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 24, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball seeks to sweep the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's (MAAC) Garden State schools on the road and pick up a winning streak when they challenge the Saint Peter's Peacocks in Jersey City during a Thursday matinée.
MOUNT UPDATE
Generating offense and crashing the glass were paramount to the Mountaineers' 60-53 victory against the Rider Broncs last Saturday. The team crossed the 60-point threshold for the fourth time this season, improving to 3-1 when that mark is achieved. With 37 rebounds to the Broncs' 35, the team finished with a positive rebounding margin for the second time this season. When matching or outpacing the competition on the boards the team is 3-0.
Several individual career highs were matched or exceeded in the game as well.
Jessica Tomasetti scored 23 points to tie her best scoring output.
Jaedyn Jamison doubled her career single-game rebounding mark with 10, and
Jada Lee manufactured five steals for a career best.
Jo Raflo tallied a trio of triples to tie for seventh among all Mount St. Mary's juniors with 38 on the year.
Defense also played a role as the team secured lengthy droughts to hold Rider to 53 on the afternoon. That effort placed them back in the top 100 nationwide, sitting 95
th among all Division I schools.
SCOUTING SAINT PETER'S
Entering Thursday, the Peacocks are looking to cast out a five-game slide and six consecutive defeats in the league. Following a season without a win in 2022-23, Saint Peter's jettisoned that streak with a win over Central Connecticut this past November 13, and defeated Marist to start 1-0 in MAAC play. Jada Leonard leads the team in scoring at 12.1 points per game, and freshman Fatmata Janneh had an impressive first season averaging 10.7 points and 7.1 rebounds. A critical piece to the puzzle, forward Jada Williams, has been sidelined with an injury since November.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
In the program's 16
th career game, the Mount hosted Saint Peter's in a 61-48 victory, beginning an almost 50-year history between the two schools. The Peacocks had the upper hand from the early 1980s until the teams linked up in the MAAC. Last season, the Mountaineers swept the series including their first victory in Jersey City on January 21
st, to pull the all-time tally to 5-6.
LOOKING AHEAD
Coming back to Emmitsburg, the Mount faces Niagara (Jan. 27) and Iona (Feb. 1) for a two-game home stand.
