EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 23rd, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's men's water polo comes off a 1-2 weekend at the Bucknell invitational. The Mountaineers won their first against Mercyhurst to uphold a perfect program history record and dropped the second and third games to Salem and Fordham.
MOUNT UPDATE
Entering the weekend, Mount presents a 2-5 overall record and an 0-1 conference record after their most recent loss to #17 Fordham. The Mountaineers have an opportunity to take one back on the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo (MAWP) conference their first game in Salem against conference foes Navy Midshipmen at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
Aaron Tarr and
Alexandros Bellesis led the offense this past weekend with seven goals apiece, while
Eli Thalos and
Chrysostomos Valavanis helped the offensive dynamic with four goals apiece.
THE OPPONENTS
Navy is first in the standings with a 6-3 record and ranked 18
th nationally by the College Water Polo Association (CWPA). The Midshipmen have notched notable wins versus #19 Santa Clara and #20 Air Force.
Gannon is second with an unblemished record of 3-0. The Golden Knights have a goal-to-goal ratio of 44-27 (1.63) and have beaten Long Island University, PSU Behrend, and Washington & Jefferson.
Penn-State University Behrend is closest to the Mount in rankings with a 3-4 record. They are currently on a win a game, lose a game continuum where they have notched wins against Connecticut Col., Wheaton, and Cal Tech.
McKendree is below the Mount in rankings with a 0-4 record. The Bearcats goal-to-goal ratio is 34-66 (0.515) and have tallied losses to Wagner, Harvard, Iona, and MIT.
