EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 15th, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's men's water polo returns to the pool to compete in the Bucknell Invite this weekend starting Saturday September 16
th with the first contest at 7:20 p.m. versus Mercyhurst. The tournament flows into Sunday starting at 10 a.m. versus Salem followed by a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference foe at 3:20 p.m. against #17 ranked Fordham.
MOUNT UPDATE
Entering the weekend, the Mountaineers hold a 1-3 overall record, having yet to face a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference opponent. The Mount last competed two weeks ago in the Brown Classic in which
Eli Thalos scored his 100
th career goal with his first score against MIT. Coach Vink and his team ended the weekend with a fourth quarter fight against MIT in which the Mount was defeated.
Aaron Tarr ended the weekend with 11 goals, seven assists, five steals while
Alexandros Bellesis tallied six goals, five assists, and seven steals.
Joseph Maxson saved 20 shots while
Sherif Hosni saved 21 and scored a full pool shot.
THE OPPONENTS
Fordham is atop the standings with a 4-3 record. Competing against #6 Princeton and #18 Harvard last weekend, sealing a win versus Harvard 14-10. Balazs Brenyi scored five goals while George Papanikolaou performed a hat trick.
Salem is second with an unblemished 5-0 record. The Tigers won two matches last weekend in Morgantown, West Virginia versus Johns Hopkins University and Washington and Jefferson College.
Mercyhurst is closest to the Mount in the standings, holding a 1-5 record. The Lakers split games last weekend in Morgantown, notching a win against Washington and Jefferson College while dropping against Johns Hopkins University. In their lone win against Johns Hopkins, Teegan Thomas scored a hat trick and scored seven goals in the fourth quarter.
