Box Score Easton, Pa. (August 20, 2023)—A late goal proved to be the difference as Mount St. Mary's was edged by Lafayette, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Leopards broke a scoreless tie with just over five minutes left for the winning tally.
The first half saw Lafayette (2-0) have the edge in possession time, but the Mount defense was able to stand tall in the back, limiting the Leopards to three shots with the Mount's
Klil Keshwar posting a pair of saves. On the offensive end, the Mount generated a pair of shots with Lindsay Dewar recording two saves. Lafayette did hold a 6-to-2 edge in corner kicks in the half.
The second half was much of the same with the Mount (0-1-1) producing a scoring chance in the 72
nd minute, but
Madison Bee's shot was collected by Dewar for the save. Three minutes later,
Amani Green took a shot from 25 yards out, but saw it go just above the cross bar. Lafayette's Sara Oswald sent a shot over the bar in the 84
th minute before the Leopards scored the winner a minute later.
Lafayette finally broke through with just over five minutes remaining when Gretchen Waechter took a ball on the right side of the box and then beat Keshwar to the far left side of the goal to make it 1-0. Nadia Zaffanella picked up the assist on the play.
Lafayette held the edge in shots in the game, 9-to-4, with a 5-to-3 advantage in shots on target. Keshwar made four saves in the game with Dewar finishing with three.
This was the first meeting between the two teams since 2007 with Lafayette holding a 8-3-1 lead in the all-time series after today's outcome.
UP NEXT: The Mount returns to Emmitsburg for the home opener against Towson on Thursday, August 24. Kick-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.
