Box Score Buffalo, N.Y. (May 11, 2023)—Mount St. Mary's saw its record-breaking season come to a close in a 1-0 loss to Iona in an elimination game at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament. The Mountaineers finished the season with a school-record 32 victories, finishing the year with a 32-19 record.
Iona (20-30-1) got the only run of the game when Emma Capuano drove a solo home run over the left center field fence in the top of the third inning.
Iona pitcher Kara Zazzaro was in control throughout the game, limiting the Mount to just one hit in the contest. The Mount had a pair of runners in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the third when
Julia Vincent and
Abigayle Perry each walked, and a wild pitch moved them to second and third. Zazzaro escaped the jam with a pair of strikeouts.
The Mount's
Mariah Godde singled in the fourth, and advanced to third on a pair of stolen bases, but was stranded when Zazzaro ended the inning with a strikeout.
Godde gave the Mount dugout life with a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh. Zazzaro, however, struck out the final three batters to close the game.
Mount starting pitcher
Olivia Murphy pitched a complete game for the Mount, allowing one run and six hits while striking out six. Godde had both of the Mount's hits while also posting a pair of steals. Zazzaro struck out 14 Mountaineers in the two-hit shutout.
