EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 7, 2023) – Winners of four straight and sitting atop the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings, Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse goes for five in a row Saturday, but face a formidable foe in the Marist Red Foxes.
MOUNT UPDATE
Averaging 16 goals during this recent win streak, the Mount's offensive prowess has been on full display. In particular, the past two games have been noteworthy, posting 20 on VMI and 18 against Quinnipiac.
Gaining possession has been helpful for the offensive numbers. Winning 58.4 percent of faceoffs (163 wins, 116 lost), the Mount has an almost four percent advantage of the team in second place.
Connor Beals is the team leader with 116 wins alone.
Beals, along with
Kelly Gouin and
TJ Gravante, earned selections as MAAC Players of the Week last Monday. Gouin stands alone for goals on the team with 16, and tied for second in points with 20. Gravante has 16 points – 10 goals and six assists.
The Mountaineers' last five game streak came in 2019, defeating Bryant, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, Utah and Wagner.
SCOUTING MARIST
Nipping at the heels of Mount St. Mary's are the Red Foxes, one game back in a three-way tie for third place with Siena and LIU. They also bring a win streak to the game, beating Sacred Heart March 29
th and Manhattan April 1
st. The win over the Jaspers helped the Mount facilitate a tie for the conference lead.
Marist boasts one of the top offenses in the MAAC, finishing second in the conference with 11.50 goals per game. Jojo Pirreca has the highest number of scores with 24, followed by Jamison Embury at 17 and James Lyons at 16.
On defense, the Red Foxes allow 13.2 goals per game. Matt Fermo has the most ground balls and Aiden McCaffrey has the most caused turnovers.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
This weekend renews a series that was contested every season from 1991 to 2010. The Mount won two-thirds of the games, leading all-time by a 14-7 margin. That includes the most recent meeting, defeating the Red Foxes 13-9 in 2010.
