Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 22, 2023)--Mount St. Mary's rallied for a 2-1 victory over Siena in the opening game of its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday. Rain forced game two to be halted with Siena leading in the top of the fourth.
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the opening innings, but the score remained scoreless through four innings of play. The Saints (29-13, 8-3 MAAC) took the lead in the top of the fifth when Sabrina Vargas singled with two outs, and then came home with the first run of the game on an Ava Fitzmaurice double to the gap in right center field.
The Mount (25-15, 8-3 MAAC) responded with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs and no one on base,
Maggie Kane singled to start the rally. Kane moved into scoring position by swiping second base, and
Mariah Godde's single to center field was just off the glove of a diving attempt by Siena's Isabella Pardo, allowing Kane to come home with the tying run. Godde stole second base to move into scoring position as well, and
Tori Bowles came through with a clutch base hit to right field to plate Godde with the go-ahead run.
In the top of the sixth, Siena managed a single and a walk off Mount starter
Avery Neuhart, but a double play and a caught stealing erased the runners on the bases. Neuhart set Siena down in order in the seventh to pick up the win.
Neuhart tossed a complete game, allowing one run and six hits while striking out three to improve to 9-3 on the year. Godde,
Abigayle Perry and
Hannah Gartrell each had two hits in the victory.
Mount St. Mary's is set to host Marist tomorrow at noon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.
