Fourth Quarter Charge Grants Women’s Water Polo Split in MAAC Games

| Box Score 2 EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 2, 2023) – Scoring six goals in the final eight minutes of play Sunday, Mount St. Mary's marched out of Lexington, Virginia with a split for a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) games. The Mountaineers fell to ranked Wagner before storming to the finish against the hosting Virginia Military Institute.

In the conference standings, the Mount stands fourth in the Blue Division with a record of 4-5 against league teams. Overall, the team holds a 12-9 mark.

Ana Luisa Cotta had a big game against the Keydets with six goals, three steals, an assist, and a field block. Heather Lock added a hat trick in the game, and Rebecca Valentine finished with three goals on the day. Mara Davis was a multi-goal scorer in the VMI showdown.

Pip Piper enjoyed a successful day in goal, including 17 saves in the Wagner contest. The graduate student returned for the second half versus VMI, making seven more stops. Samantha Bright was in the cage to open the Keydets contest, ending with a positive save margin of eight out of 14 shots on goal.

Wagner gave no quarter to the Mount in the opening game, shutting out the Mountaineers 5-0 by the end of the first period and carrying a 10-2 lead into halftime. The #17 ranked Seahawks maintained a spotless conference record and are now 25-6 on the year.

VMI was also a rocky start, and the homestanding Keydets jumped out to a 4-2 advantage after eight minutes. But the Mount's offense responded to the challenge with a 5-0 run, beginning with two scores from Lock. A pair of Cotta goals bookended one by Davis and it was the visitors who were up 7-6 heading into the locker room.

After the sides played even in the third, Mount St. Mary's closed the door with a 4-0 outburst. Annefleur ten Bloemendal found the back of the net 15 seconds into the frame to spark the run, followed by more scores from Lock, Davis, and Cotta. The game in their hands, the Mount traded goals with VMI to the final buzzer.

Next weekend sees the squad travel to Villanova for two contests. Along with battling the hosting Wildcats, the Mount also challenges the La Salle Explorers.
