Women’s Water Polo West Coast Bound for Convergence Tournament

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 1, 2023) – A full weekend of games awaits Mount St. Mary's women's water polo at the California-based Convergence Tournament. The Mount battles four teams over two days with games at the University of La Verne and Pomona Pitzer.
 
MOUNT UPDATE
 
At the Grove City Classic February 24th and 25th, the Mountaineers swept all three contests, winning each game by double-digit margins. They defeated the host Wolverines 23-4, Penn State Behrend 16-5 and Gannon 19-8. Shelby Diaz paced 13 scorers with four goals against Grove City, Serena Thurman added five more versus the Lions and Heather Lock compiled another five against the Golden Knights.
 
In their third season of competition, the Mount is off to their best start in team history at 6-2. Annefleur ten Bloemendal leads in goals with 20, steals with 19 and drawn exclusions with 22. Ana Luisa Cotta leads in assists with 14 and field blocks with six. Of the goalkeepers' 90 saves so far, Pip Piper has the most with 61.
 
THE OPPONENTS
 
Westcliff went 1-3 in February, with the victory coming against Cal Lutheran. The Warriors play McKendree before competing at Convergence. La Verne began the season 1-5, with their lone win coming against Cal State Monterey Bay.
 
Day two begins with Concordia, or CUI for short. The Golden Eagles stand at 6-7, building a five-game win streak before falling to Biola in their most recent game February 25th. They will face Santa Clara and McKendree on March 2nd before Convergence.
 
Pacific is ranked in the top 20 poll and are off to a 9-4 start. At the Indiana Classic, the Tigers went 2-2 with wins over Salem and Occidental. Dora Alaksza is the team's leading goal scorer with 33 on the year, and Clara Vulpisi has 76 saves in the cage.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
 
Mount St. Mary's will face all four teams for the first time.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
 
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play begins March 18th and 19th with three games at Marist.
