EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 19, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo had a halftime advantage, but the host Marist Red Foxes responded with seven goals in the third quarter, sending the Mountaineers to a 15-13 defeat at the McCann Natatorium.
Ana Luisa Cotta led in the goals column with four, one of five players to post multi-goal games.
Robyn Currie supplied five assists and
Annefleur ten Bloemendal drew six exclusions.
Exclusions were a big part of the time, which in the end benefited Marist. While Mount St. Mary's drew 12 infractions, they were whistled for 15. This allowed the Red Foxes to take advantage of man-up opportunities, scoring nine times on the 6v5. There were also 14 Mount turnovers, permitting Marist to tack on two more scores via the counter.
All even at third through eight minutes of play, the Mount charged ahead in the second quarter with four goals to go up 7-5 at the break. But while the visitors' offense was consistent throughout, Marist found a bright spot with their third quarter outburst. Leading 12-10 entering the frame, the Red Foxes played even in the fourth to hold on for the win.
The Mount fell to 9-6 this year and are 1-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
