Mount St. Mary’s Succumbs to Late Navy Run in Season Opener

Box Score ANNAPOLIS, Md.  (February 4, 2023) – The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team battled tough with the Navy Midshipmen in the 2023 season opener. It took a late fourth quarter run by Navy to clinch a 13-7 decision for the home team on a brisk Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Jared McMahon was the leading point scorer with four, split between two goals and two assists. Cormac Giblin also enjoyed a multi-goal contest, matching McMahon's two scores. Griffin McGinley added 11 saves in goal.

Patrick Skalniak led the game with five scores for Navy, followed by Henry Tolker with a hat trick of three.

Offensive opportunities were few and far between in the first quarter. McGinley earned his first save five minutes in while Navy netminder Pat Ryan stymied two shots in the first few minutes. The Mids opened the scoring on a goal from Tolker, but McMahon answered with the equalizer two minutes later.

Staying efficient with getting shots on goal, the Mount continued to work Ryan at the net. Navy answered the call, with Giblin scoring at the 11:32 mark serving as the team's lone goal. Skalniak and Max Hewitt found the back of the net for Navy, allowing them to take a 3-2 lead into the locker room.

Jake Krieger scored to open the Mount's second half scoring, but Navy replied with a 3-0 run to go up 7-3. McMahon and Giblin led a small rally that pulled the Mountaineers within two heading into the final period.

After the Midshipmen registered two goals to go up 9-5, Mount made a comeback attempt at the midway point. Jeremy Wilson and Brian Bradley posted goals over 75 seconds to pull back within 9-7. But the late Navy run began at the 6:37 mark, sparking a 4-0 run to seal the contest.

Mount St. Mary's opens their home schedule next Saturday (Feb. 11) with Towson. First face off is slated for 3 p.m. from Waldron Family Stadium.
