EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 24, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo took a convincing victory from Grove City College in their first-ever meeting. The Mountaineers captured the win over the Wolverines by a 23-4 final.
In a combined team effort, 13 different Mountaineers found the back of the net, led by
Shelby Diaz with four goals – her first career hat trick.
Heather Lock also got her first career hat trick with three scores. Seven of the team's members posted multi-goal efforts.
Emily Hatcher had the highest number of assists with three of them. Players tabulated 20 assists throughout the day.
Samantha Bright played the first half as the goalkeeper and earned seven saves while
Hannah Keyser played the second half and earned five saves. Defense was aided by a season high 24 steals, led by
Natalie Marquiss and
Serena Thurman with three each. Four Mountaineers picked up field blocks along the way.
Mount St. Mary's established control from the outset, building up a halftime lead of 13-2. After the Wolverines got back on the board early in the third quarter, the Mount replied with numerous goals in a run that further ensured the contest's outcome.
Friday's win stops a two-game losing streak, improving the team's record to 4-2.
The Mount battles Penn State Behrend and Gannon Saturday (Feb. 25) before returning home.
