EMMITSBURG, Md. (December 2, 2023) – Sophomore
Madelyn Valpy and junior
Simone Smith matched each other in the triple jump, becoming joint school record holders at the indoor track season opening Navy Invitational in Annapolis.
The duo earned marks of 11.70 meters apiece, with Valpy taking seventh and Smith finishing eighth. The jumps overtake the previous high of 11.65 meters, set first by Fatima Abbas in 2002 and matched by
Jovana Miloradovic last year.
On the men's side of the meet, several Mountaineers took home second place finishes.
Daniel Reader took runner-up in the 400 meter dash, finishing in 49.33 seconds as part of a 2-3-4 trio with
Jahari Miller (49.98) and
Todd Charles (50.10). Additional second place showings came from
Niels Peeters in the 3000 meter (8:30.80),
Arran Fahey in the pole vault (4.60 meters), and
Cyre Hooper in the men's triple jump (14.82 meters). Hooper's mark places him third on the program's top 10 list, and Fahey ties for 10
th.
Will Stephenson qualified for the 60 hurdles finals with an 8.35 second effort, then improved that time by .06 seconds to take third.
Elizabeth Freymann also finished third during the mile run, finishing the event in 5:13.79. Stephenson's time lands a hundredth of a second short of his high Mount mark.
Saturday's meet was not affected by team scoring.
At the Bucknell Bison Opener, four student-athletes took first in their sections -
Anna Hsia (200m),
Natalie Spadaccini (800m),
Travis Thompson (200m), and Drew Evans (Shot Put).
The season resumes January 20 with a second meet at Bucknell, alongside an event at Catholic University.
