EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 28, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's bowling continues to find success in what is the toughest field the team faces all year. They went 3-2 on day two of the Prairie View A&M Invitational, defeating #2 North Carolina A&T, #3 Vanderbilt and #7 Youngstown State.
Graduate student
Barbara Hawes and freshman
Trishelle Leal Uribe were the two biggest presences in the Mount's lineup Saturday. The veteran Hawes edged the first-year player 1,011 to 1,010 in a pair of stellar outings. Junior
Alyssa Alexander averaged a 198 over four games, and senior
Amanda Yeung and freshman
Sierra Calo rolled five-game sets over 900.
Alexander's best game came in the opener with a 257, propelling the Mountaineers to a 993 score and a victory over the seventh-ranked Penguins. Hawes and Leal Uribe also began with positive numbers, both rolling games in the 190s.
Things got even better against the second-ranked Aggies. Four of five players registered a 200 or more, led by Calo with a 225. The 1,050 pinfall is the best for the team in three weeks, falling a few pins shy of the 1,063 they rolled against Texas Southern at the Stormin' Blue & White.
The merciless tournament gave no rest as the third-ranked Commodores awaited. Undeterred, the Mount rose to the occasion as for the second straight game, four Mountaineers had scores of 200 or better. Leal Uribe led the squad with a 226, with Yeung right behind at 223. The Mount even managed to top their 1,050 from the North Carolina A&T game with a 1,061.
Setbacks came later in the day against Fairleigh Dickinson and McKendree. Hawes continued her pace with a 213 versus the Knights but the rest of the scores among the team tapered off a bit. Leal Uribe finished strong with a 210 against the top-ranked Bearcats, but a 909 was not enough to topple the nation's best.
Laney Wells came off the bench to roll a 163 in the final round.
Put together with the 2-3 start Friday, the Mount holds a 5-5 record entering the final day. There is one more round of qualifying Sunday morning, where Mount St. Mary's takes on Stephen F. Austin. Following that are two rounds of bracket play.
