EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 13, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball begins a two-game homestand as the Canisius Golden Griffins come to Emmitsburg.
MOUNT UPDATE
Traveling to Iona for the first time, the Mount received a cool reception in New Rochelle. Succumbing to an 8-0 run out of the gate, they were unable to recover in a 19 point loss to the Gaels.
Natalie Villaflor reached double figures with 10 points scored and
Isabella Hunt posted rebounds in back-to-back games for the second time in her career.
Saturday's game marks the beginning of the second half of the season. Sitting in ninth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings, the team seeks an improvement on the offensive end as they averaged 56.2 points in conference games so far.
Jessica Tomasetti leads the group with 12.5 points per game.
All six of the team's wins have been on the home court so far. A victory Saturday will improve their Knott Arena record to 7-1 this year.
SCOUTING THE GRIFFINS
Canisius comes to Emmitsburg seeking to right the ship after dropping four of the past five games. The lone win came on January 5
th, needing overtime to topple Saint Peter's at home. The Golden Griffins stand in a tie for seventh place in the MAAC with the Manhattan Jaspers.
Dani Haskell and Vannessa Garrelts each average double figures for Canisius, with Haskell leading with 12.8 points per game. Sisi Eleko is the leading rebounder and Brooklyn Thrash holds the most blocks and most efficient scoring rate among the starting lineup.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Mount St. Mary's and Canisius meet for the sixth time on the basketball court. The past five meetings were all won by the home side. Mount took the last meeting in 2009 by a 55-51 score. Sandra Andresson and Courtney Nyce sparked a 13-5 comeback run to seal the victory late.
LOOKING AHEAD
Two games await next week, split between home and road. The Mount hosts Marist on Thursday (Jan. 19) before traveling to Saint Peter's Saturday (Jan. 21).
