EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 29, 2022) – For the first time in program history, Mount St. Mary's men's water polo heads to the West Coast for the Gary Troyer Tournament. The multi-day events attract teams from all over the country to face a host of California schools.
Games take place at La Verne with the Biola contest at Pomona-Pitzer.
Friday sees the Chapman Panthers face off against the Mount at 1 p.m. Eastern time followed by Biola at 5 p.m. that evening. On Saturday, La Verne is the 1:20 p.m. challenger, with a wrap up at 5:20 p.m. versus #16 California Baptist.
MOUNT UPDATE
The Mountaineers head to California with an 8-4 record and a 3-3 mark in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference. Every player on the roster has made at least one appearance in a game this season, and 15 members of the squad have posted at least one goal.
After a five-game winning streak, the Mount met its match in a 16-13 defeat at Navy.
Tommaso Baldineti registered his 10
th multi-goal effort out of 11, scoring six times. He also led with four assists and three steals. Battling against a physical, disciplined Navy team, Mount St. Mary's limited extra chances to Midshipmen, conceding 10 exclusions with eight draws.
THE OPPONENTS
Champan enters the weekend with an even 6-6 record, having defeated La Verna Wednesday night 17-10. Efficient scoring helped the Panthers capture the victory, scoring at a rate of 54.8 percent. Three players logged hat tricks, paced by five from Everett Pussak.
Biola is 5-10 with an extra game slated against UC San Diego Thursday before Gary Troyer. Maxwell Osborn leads in goals with 33 and points at 43. Nolan Rapp has logged 40 points in a near split between goals and assists, with 24 steals.
La Verne's loss to Chapman dropped their record to 3-10 on the year. The magic number for the Leopards is 15 conceded goals – they are 3-0 when giving up fewer than that total and 0-10 when allowing more. In the Chapman game, graduate student James Cano led with five scores.
CBU enters ranked with an 8-6 record, but like Biola, have a Thursday contest before Gary Troyer. All defeats have come against teams positioned higher in the rankings. The Lancers use a balanced attack with 195 goals but no individual above 30. Joseph Griffin leads with 29 scores, and primary goalkeeper Tristan Felberg eclipsed the 100 save mark in the win over Concordia.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The one school with a previous history against the Mount is Biola, a 14-11 Mountaineers victory earlier this season.
