Mount St. Mary's Softball Drops Non-Conference Matchup at George Washington, 4-1

Box Score Washington, D.C. (April 27, 2022)—Mount St. Mary's recorded a triple play, but it was not enough in a 4-1 loss at George Washington on Wednesday afternoon.  Abigayle Perry hit her team-leading sixth home run in the loss that sees the Mount fall to 23-19 on the season.

The Mountaineers defense was on full display in the opening innings.  In the bottom of the first, George Washington put the first two runners on base with a walk and an error against Mount starter Amanda Berkley.  The Mount was able to escape the jam, turning a triple play when Alessandra Ponce grounded to third baseman Maggie Kane, who relayed to Bridgette Gilliano at second for the second out, and Gilliano firing the ball to Kaia Bonshock to complete the 5-4-3 triple play.

The Mount defense continued to shine with a double play in the bottom of the second.  After a one-out single, the Mount ended the inning on a 1-6-3 double play.  The Mountaineers entered today's game sixth in the nation in double plays turned per game.

Mount St. Mary's took the lead in the top of the third when Perry cracked her team-leading sixth home run of the season, a two-out solo home run down the left field line.

George Washington scored three times in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.  Avery Neuhart came on in relief to start the third for the Mount and retired the first two batters.  Abby Schaub drew a two-out walk and Sierra Lange followed with a single to put runners on first and second.  Alexa Williams gave GW the lead with a two-run double, and a Ponce RBI single pushed the Mount's deficit to 3-1.
Williams added to the lead with a solo home run in the fifth inning off Mount relief pitcher Elizabeth King.

The Mount had four pitchers appear in the game with Berkley tossing two scoreless innings and Olivia Murphy a scoreless inning of relief.

The Mountaineers have the weekend off and return to play on Wednesday, May 4, with a 2:00 p.m. home doubleheader against George Mason.
