Box Score Loretto, Pa. (April 21, 2022)—Mount St. Mary's dropped the final game of its three-game series at Saint Francis U, 3-0, on Thursday afternoon in a matchup of the top two teams in Northeast Conference play.
In a classic pitcher's duel, Mount starter
Avery Neuhart and SFU starter Rachel Marsden matched zeroes on the scoreboard for the first five innings of play.
After a scoreless sixth inning for the Mount, the Red Flash (27-14, 13-2 NEC) scored three times in the bottom of the inning to seal the win. Madison Barnes opened the frame with a solo home run to left center field for a 1-0 lead. After Neuhart got a pair of popouts, Lindsay Ward drew a walk to set the table for Marsden, who cracked a two-run homer for a 3-0 advantage.
The Mountaineers (21-17, 13-5 NEC) had their best chance to score in the fifth when
Brianna Manni singled and
Mariah Godde walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Marsden was able to escape the jam by getting
Abigayle Perry to ground out to third to end the inning.
Manni led the Mount offense in the game, going 2-for-2 in the game with a stolen base.
Tori Bowles and
Kaia Bonshock each added a hit in the loss. Neuhart allowed three runs on five hits in the complete-game effort. Marsden struck out seven while allowing four hits in the complete-game shutout victory.
