EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 6, 2022) – Seeking payback against a Harvard team that shut them out eight days later, Mount St. Mary's women's water polo put up a tenacious fight against the Crimson in a Collegiate Water Polo Association showdown. After battling to a 1-1 tie through the first quarter, the #20 team nation broke for six goals in the second, riding the momentum to a 13-3 win.
Samantha Bright proved vital in goal, staring down a relentless Crimson offense. The New Zealander stopped 12 saves, including two of the three penalties she faced.
Defense stepped up in the opening period, with Bright and company holding Harvard at bay, despite being tested from the start. Twice the Crimson were denied 6v5 opportunities.
Robyn Currie fired a shot past the surprised Harvard goalkeeper to keep things level.
The second quarter did not shift to Harvard right away as the Mount defense limited the home team to a lone goal over the first few minutes. The dam would break around the midway point with a 4-0 run before
Emily Van Kerckhove responded with the goal.
Up 7-2 at the break, Harvard showed no mercy in the third with a 4-0 frame. Defenders for the visitors clamped down to allow two goals in the fourth, with
Serena Thurman able to crack the scoreboard.
Next weekend (March 12
