EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 19, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo continues to make strides, facing their daunting Collegiate Water Polo Association schedule. Weeks after a big setback at the hands of #21 Brown, the teams found themselves deadlocked after one quarter Sunday at the ARCC Swimming Pool. The Bears managed to pull away for a 12-6 win, and #7 Michigan emerged from Emmitsburg by an 18-2 score in the second game.
Robyn Currie led the Mount in goals scored on the day, with two against Brown and one against Michigan. Currie added multiple assists in the Bears game, joining
Ana Luisa Cotta. Keeper
Samantha Bright finished with eight steals, and
Hannah Keyser added three more swipes in the net.
Beatrice Vieira guided the home side at the outset with two goals in the first period. The jubilant Mountaineers saw a 2-0 lead within the opening two minutes. Brown rallied to tie twice, forcing a 3-3 score after one quarter of play. The Bears took the reins in the second with three scores before the Mount could answer. Goals by Currie and
Rebecca Valentine helped close the gap before halftime, but Brown's defense clamped down in the final 16 minutes, limiting the Mountaineers to a single goal the rest of the way.
Michigan seized control of the afternoon contest right away, building a 6-0 lead after one and an 8-0 advantage at the break. Cotta put her team on the board with a shot at the 5:40 mark of the third quarter. The second goal was submitted by Currie in the closing moments of the day.
With their record at 7-19 (0-8 CWPA), Mount St. Mary's heads for a single game in Loretto to play Saint Francis U Friday (March 25).
