EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 27, 2022) – Freshman
Rebecca Valentine once again led the charge with seven scores, but the Mount dropped two contests to Saint Francis U and Bucknell. The games wrapped up the first weekend of Collegiate Water Polo Association play.
Valentine also led the team in drawn exclusions with six.
Lauryn Thomas led in assists during the Red Flash game and
Robyn Currie led for the Bucknell game, each tallying three. Multi-goal scorers in addition to Valentine included
Emily Van Kerckhove with two against SFU, and two each from
Beatrice Vieira and Currie against Bucknell.
Sibley Kuder got the nod in the net, earning 15 saves over the course of the day.
Thomas scored first for the Mountaineers to give them a 1-0 lead before SFU scored three unanswered goals to close out the quarter. Valentine had the hat trick by halftime as the team trailed 8-4. Six goals in the second half proved not enough as the Red Flash scored nine times in a gradual pull away.
After being shutout in the first quarter against the Bison, the Mount stayed close to even throughout the remainder of the contest. Matching Bucknell in the second quarter, the two sides played to an 11-8 score across the last 24 minutes.
The Mount's record stands at 4-13 (0-4 CWPA). More conference action occurs next weekend with a rematch against Harvard and the team's first-ever exchange with Brown University. A non-conference game with Cal Lutheran is also on the schedule. Games occur March 5
th and 6
th in Boston.
