Box Score 2 Stanford, Calif. (February 26, 2022)—Mount St. Mary's dropped a pair of games on Saturday to Pac 12 opponents at the DeMarini Invitational hosted by Stanford. The Mount fell to California, 8-5, to start the day before falling to host Stanford, 8-0, this evening.
CALIFORNIA 8, MOUNT ST. MARY'S 5
In the first game of the day, the Mount jumped out to a pair of early two-run leads, but California rallied to post an 8-5 victory.
The Mount struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.
Abigayle Perry drew a walk to lead off the game and
Bridgette Gilliano reached on an error to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a flyout moved the runners up, Perry came home on an error by Cal's third basemen to make it 1-0.
Kassidy Johnson followed with an RBI single to put the Mount up by two after the top of the first.
California's Makena Smith belted a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the first, but the Mount responded with a run in the top of the second to restore a two-run lead.
Mariah Godde and
Laurenne Gallagher each singled to open the second for the Mount. It was the first collegiate hit for the freshman Gallagher. That prompted a pitching change for the Bears, and after a strikeout, Perry was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gilliano then singled to left to score Godde to make it 3-1.
Kaia Bonshock then flew out to left, and Gallagher was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the fly out.
California strung together four singles in the bottom of the second off Mount starter
Olivia Murphy to score three times to take the lead at 4-3. The Bears added to the lead with an unearned run in the third for a two-run lead. A three-run sixth inning stretched the advantage to 8-3 heading to the top of the seventh.
The Mount staged a two-out rally in the seventh when Gallagher was hit by a pitch and
Zoe Truxon walked to put runners on first and second. Perry then singled to load the bases for Gilliano, who came through with a two-run single down the right field line to cut the deficit to 8-5. Cal was able to end the threat with a strikeout to earn the win.
Gilliano went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the game for the Mount while Johnson also went 2-for-4 at the plate. Murphy allowed five runs in three innings in the game while
Amaya Bowman pitched the final three innings, allowing three runs (two earned) .
This was the second all-time meeting between the Mount and California.
STANFORD 8, MOUNT ST. MARY'S 0 (6 inn.)
For the second consecutive game, Stanford held the Mount without a hit en route to an 8-0 win in six innings on Saturday night. Stanford's Molly Millar struck out 14 while allowing three baserunners (all on hit batsmen) to record the no-hitter.
Stanford (13-2) ntook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Emily Young and Kaitlyn Kim each had RBI singles in the frame while the third run scored on a passed ball. Sydnee Huff's RBI triple highlighted a two-run second for a 5-0 lead. The Cardinal added a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to secure the victory.
Avery Neuhart started for the Mount, allowing five runs (two earned) in three innings of work.
Amaya Bowman tossed two innings of relief, allowing one earned run.
The Mount concludes the DeMarini Invitational tomorrow against California.
