EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 25, 2022) – In the Mount's Collegiate Water Polo Association opener, the home side hung tough with a strong second quarter against the #20 Princeton Tigers. But the visitors surged at the start and used a second half charge to take down the Mountaineers 22-8 at the ARCC Swimming Pool.
Mount St. Mary's drops to 4-10 (0-1 CWPA) while Princeton improves to 10-2 (3-0 CWPA).
Rebecca Valentine earned two of the Mount's four goals in the second period and finished with three on the day. Five more Mountaineers tallied one goal each. Freshman
Beatrice Vieira added four steals on defense and
Hannah Keyser supplied seven saves.
Princeton received five scores from Kaila Carroll and four more from Jovana Sekulic.
The Tigers took charge early with a pair of 5-0 runs in the opening frame. A score by
Lauryn Thomas in the middle prevented the shutout. But the Mount roared back in the second, outpacing Princeton by a 4-1 score. Along with Valentine's two registrations,
Ana Luisa Cotta and Vieira also contributed goals.
Momentum shifted back to the Tigers in the second half with a third run of 5-0. Goals by
Mara Davis and
Madison Szczublewski headlined the Mount's fourth quarter efforts.
